70% of the 131,000 inmates released each year from California prisons will re-offend and return to prison within three years. Another 189,000 inmates are released from California county jails each year only to succumb to a similar fate.

Taxpayers spend $43,000 to house a prisoner for one year, but as inmates age and medical needs increase, the cost can escalate to $70,000 a year.

Total yearly California criminal justice costs for enforcement, prosecution, jails, and prisons exceed $35,000,000,000, annually.

Victims suffer and endure the true cost of crimes whether it be financial, physical, or emotional.
America's youth suffers from the cyclical effect of not having positive and productive role models in their lives.
Why Commercial Truck Driving:
Due to an expanding population and a diverse economy the commercial transportation industry has found itself in a driver shortage.

The American Trucking Association reported there is a current need of 54,000 new drivers each year and will continue for the next decade. According to the Department of Labor, a 14% increase in qualified drivers is projected through 2014.

Does Vocational Training Work:
A 2004 study conducted by The Arizona Corrections Department found vocational education of inmates reduced recidivism by 28%. Also of interest is a study conducted by the Urban Institute Research that shows over 80% of prisoners interviewed one month prior to their release date said that a job trumps all other ways of staying out of prison.

The Re-Entry Council reiterates the importance that most prisoners would benefit from vocational training and is a key component in lowering the recidivism rate. They also state in their 2005 report:

"Community-based organizations should be involved in delivering job-skills programming to the greatest extent possible. Volunteer and faith-based organizations, as well as other nonprofit service providers, can provide some of the most critical support systems available to individuals upon release. Early contact between these organizations and inmates provides a firm foundation for such relationships, which can encourage participation in programming and ensure that engagement continues post-release. Furthermore, incorporating staff from community-based organizations can shift the burden of service delivery away from corrections staff."
